Endoscopy / Colonoscopy

Camera-guided examination of the stomach and bowel to diagnose digestive problems.

Endoscopy and colonoscopy let a specialist look directly inside your digestive system using a thin, flexible tube with a camera. Small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken during the test if needed.

  • Upper GI endoscopy examines the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small intestine.
  • Colonoscopy examines the large bowel (colon).

Why you might need one

  • Ongoing acidity, heartburn or upper abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing, or vomiting blood
  • A change in bowel habits, or blood in the stool
  • Unexplained anaemia or weight loss

Preparing for the test

For an endoscopy you will need to stop eating several hours before. For a colonoscopy you will take a bowel preparation the day before so the colon is clear. Our team will give you clear instructions when you book. If you are given sedation, please bring someone to take you home and do not drive for the rest of the day.

Common questions

Most people feel some pressure or bloating rather than pain. Sedation may be offered to keep you comfortable; our team will discuss this with you.

The procedure itself is usually short, but plan to be at the clinic for a few hours to allow for preparation and recovery.

The doctor can usually tell you what they saw straight after the test. Biopsy results take longer, and we will let you know when to come back for them.
