Most people have heartburn or acidity now and then, often after a large or spicy meal. When it keeps coming back, it is worth getting checked.

See a doctor if you have

  • Acidity or upper stomach pain most days for more than a few weeks
  • Symptoms that keep returning after you stop your medicines
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Unplanned weight loss, or feeling full very quickly

Seek urgent care if you have

  • Vomiting blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Black, tarry stools

What the doctor may suggest

After talking through your symptoms, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes, medicines, or tests. If needed, an endoscopy lets a specialist look directly at the food pipe and stomach.
